Welcome to Halifax Veterinary Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia

The kindness and care that your pet deserves.

In 1939, the Halifax Veterinary Hospital opened its doors and became the first established Animal Hospital Practice in the Halifax area. Dr. Ross Ainslie acquired the hospital in 1953 and has since been committed to offering excellence in animal health care, promoting responsible pet ownership and health-related educational opportunities for our clients. Conveniently located within the city of Halifax, our health care team offers over 95 years of experience with extensive and ongoing training in all aspects of Veterinary medicine.

The Halifax Veterinary Hospital is an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Since 1996, we have regularly undergone evaluations by AAHA to ensure that we comply with the association’s high-quality standards of care. These standards cover nearly every aspect of our hospital, including surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, exam facilities, patient care, cleanliness, client service, emergency services, diagnostic imaging, and anesthesiology. The AAHA accreditation process is rigorous and exact and only about 7 percent of Animal Hospitals in North America receive this highly valued accreditation.

Halifax Veterinary Hospital is also a Cat Friendly Practice accredited at the Gold level. Our staff handle and treat cats with understanding, gentleness and respect, and make every effort to ensure your visit is as stress-free for you and your cat as possible. You and your feline family member will enjoy our cat-only exam room that includes a cat pheromone diffuser to help cats feel comfortable and safe.

The professional and courteous health care team at the Halifax Veterinary Hospital provide the best possible medical, surgical and dental care for our highly-regarded patients. While we are experts in our field dedicated to giving our best every day, we are also pet owners who understand your desire to give your pets the best care. We treat all of our patients as if they were our own pets. Please take a moment to contact us today to learn more about how our veterinary practice can serve the needs of you and your cherished pet. We look forward to being Your Other Family Doctor.

Does your feline have extra toes? The history behind Polydactyl Cats

Most cats have 18 toes; five toes on each of their front feet, and four on the back.  My cat, Mandy Pawtinkin, is blessed with 22 toes.  She has a congenital physical anomaly called polydactyly (Greek for ‘many digits’).  It is a genetic mutation that causes cats to be born with more than the usual number of toes on one or more of its paws.
