Our Services at Halifax Veterinary Hospitals
One human year is equal to five-to-ten animal years – preventative health care ensures your pet stays healthy and happy.
ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAMS & VACCINE RISK ASSESSMENTS
Annual physical exams are just as important for animals as they are for humans – ours are tailored to your pet’s life stages and needs. In a typical pet physical, our veterinarian will review these aspects of your pet’s health:
- listening to heart & lungs for abnormalities
- temperature reading to rule out underlying infection
- palpation of the abdomen to assess organ size, pain response or tumours
- assessing dental health and home care to identify disease or pain
- examining ears & eyes for abnormalities (i.e. cataracts, infection or reactions)
- checking skin and coat for lumps/bumps, hidden mats, reactive tissue, pigment changes or hair loss
- assessing legs and feet for weakness, muscle loss, limping
- checking urogenital area for physical changes, heats, discharges
- reviewing medical history and medications
- discussing nutrition, housing, toys, behaviour and medications
A Vaccine Risk Assessment is performed at the same time as the annual physical exam. This assessment is used to determine the necessity of vaccinating your pet. Exposure (pet travels; local exposure to multiple animals of the same species), immune issues and vaccine history are key factors in the assessment.
We are now issuing new FREE pet identification tags when your furry friend is vaccinated with the DEFENSOR® 3 rabies vaccine. This new and innovative tag will help facilitate the return of your lost pet. Click here for more information!

International Travel Exams
Before taking your pet on vacations to other countries, we offer an International Travel Exam for your pet. During this 30-minute assessment we will review your pet's vaccination status and if need be, administer required vaccinations. Additionally, we offer other laboratory work (as required by certain countries). During this assessment, a veterinarian will also fill out the required paperwork for you to take with you on your trip.
Early Detection Packages
Our early detection packages helps your veterinarian establish normal baseline laboratory values. We’ve designed early detection packages for cats and dogs, young and old. Pets of all ages can benefit from understanding baseline values, even subtle changes from baseline values can help identify disease as your pet ages, long before they become apparent to you or your veterinarian. SPAYING / NEUTUERING

IN-HOUSE LAB TESTING
On-site, state-of-the-art equipment manufactured from Idexx Laboratories, enables the doctor to receive results within 15 minutes, allowing a faster diagnosis and quicker treatment. Our exceptionally high standard of diagnostic equipment quality control ensures accurate and reliable results.
High-tech fiber optics permit direct visual examination and biopsies of your pet’s gastrointestinal system. This allows for more accurate diagnosis and treatment of oral, esophageal, stomach, colon and upper intestinal tract disease.
This non-invasive, state-of-the-art technology uses sound waves to painlessly examine specific internal organs, primarily the heart and abdominal organs.
X-rays help our veterinarians evaluate musculoskeletal, cardiovascular (cardiopulmonary), gastrointestinal, reproductive and urinary systems. With our use of Digital Radiography, a filmless X-ray image capture, the benefits are less radiation exposure (for patients & team members) and improved time efficiency (less stress and/or anaesthetic for your pet).
Sometimes conditions arise that require veterinarians with additional training. Our staff has access to certified veterinary cardiologists, oncologists, neurologists and ophthalmologists.
Your pet’s dental health can be crucial to quality of life. As dental disease and infection not only affects your animal’s mouth, causing pain, discomfort and loss of appetite, it can also have a negative effect on your pet’s vital organs. Preventative health care is key.
We use digital dental radiology (filmless image capture) to assess tooth root structure below the gum line to rule out abscess, absorptive lesions and retained roots. With modern ultrasonic equipment and hand instruments (similar to human dental procedures), each tooth is cleaned thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque build-up. We promote home care such as dental diets, water additives and brushing teeth to aid in maintaining your pet’s proper oral health.
NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING AND PRODUCTS
All pets benefit from a balanced diet and some require special food for nutritional therapy. Our trained and certified staff will help you choose the right diet for your pet to keep him or her happy, healthy and active.
